The sail started from the Royal Southern Yacht Club in the afternoon of Thursday 27th May with a crew of 6 skippered by Jonathan Appleby made up of Hamble Valley Rotary Club members including President Derek Gerrard. Some were experienced sailors, some had little experience and for some it was a first. Our aim was to sail non-stop the 500/600 nautical miles from the Hamble River down through the Channel Islands along the north Brittany coast around Ushant and down the south Brittany coast until we reached the mouth of the Loire River sailing on up the river to Nantes to be greeted by our twin club, Nantes sur Loire.

Our craft was a mature lady and is 23 years old with many sea miles under her keel. Her length is 46 feet over all weighing 17 tonnes and she is rigged as a schooner. This was her longest voyage so far.

For us as a Club to have both the opportunity and challenge to establish the first Sailability facility on the Hamble which if we raise sufficient funds is something of which we can be truly proud.
